Ingredients

Scale

4 large apples (sweet variety like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith)
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup chopped walnuts
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons water (for baking dish)

Instructions

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C)
Cut a small slice around the top of each apple and remove cores to create a hollow cavity
Mix brown sugar, chopped walnuts, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl
Stuff the filling into each apple cavity, pressing to compact
Place apples in a baking dish with 2 tablespoons water to keep from drying out
Cover loosely with foil and bake 35-40 minutes until apples are tender
Remove foil and cool slightly before serving

Notes

Use apples that hold their shape during baking
For extra richness, add 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract to the filling
Store leftovers chilled in an airtight container for up to 3 days
